One of the clues may be to identify the switch engine in the center of the pic. It is not Chicago.

That's the Green Diamond in St. Louis or possibly East St. Louis. That switcher is in the old gray TRRA scheme.

I tried a web search for Smiley Paper Stock Co. (sign on building in background) and while there wasn't a company by that name in St. Louis today, the family name is prevalent in the St. Louis metro area.

Definitely St. Louis, looking west from probably the 14th Street Bridge. That's the 18th Street Bridge in the background, the train is heading east having just left St.Louis Union Station. In today's world, the current Amtrak station would be just to the right out of the picture.

Thanks guys. I researched Smiley Paper Stock Co and figured it might be somewhere around St Louis. Thanks for confirming.

St. Louis, absolutely. The view is to the southwest from the 14th St. bridge.

The truss bridge just past the train is the 18th St. bridge over TRRA and MP trackage. Union Station would be at 18th St., just to the right of the bridge, and just out of view.

The 1950's-modern, brick building to the right of Smiley Paper is the headquarters of what was at the time of the image Union Electric Co. (today Ameren, still in the same building though updated in appearance), the region's electric utility.

The train is on TRRA trackage, and an IC train in this position would be outbound from Union Station.

Very nice image.
