1977 on the WP in San Jose, CA.
Author: lamta_jay

I took these while visiting my sister who lived in South San Jose at
the time. Now she lives in Los Altos !

Can't go here and take any kind of RR photos any longer since this area
I believe all built up now. Glad I found these !

I can't remember why I took these on negative film, I always tried to
purchase Kodachrome, or Ektachrome if Kodachrome was not available.

I spruced them up just a bit to make them more user friendly.

Thanks for looking

Jay

Looks like I went back a year later and took these on Ektachrome !

I agree with Bob. There are always questions about railroad facilities, tracks and their functions. So these are great views of the yard.

You are correct, thanks to major urban sprawl in the area, this scene is unrecognizable today. There are nothing but multi-story houses on this site now.

I worked as an Engineer in San Jose during this time and your photos bring back wonderful memories. Thank you, Frank.

What's the building with all the trackside sliding doors?

Jay,
Thanks for sharing these memorable shots of the SJ yard as I remember it. A nice birthday present for me. Thanks again.

A nice peek at the "forgotten " end of the railroad!

I've got a mid-50's track chart that shows that building as 'Republic and National Carloading', and a mid-70's chart that shows 'Universal Carloading'.

The apartment in the background of picture 3 is still there and recognizable today (with enclosed garages now instead of carports). It's about the only way to connect anything there in 1977 to today other than the I-280 bridge.
