Switcher Saturday - SW1 at Wilmington

Ex-NYC 733 (built 1939) is at the roundhouse in Wilmington,Delaware in Sept 1979.
It was scrapped in 1980.

That certainly is a forlorn but interesting scene with the old SW1, the weeds, and dilapidated building.

With all of that oil in the dirt I'm amazed that weeds could actually grow!

Looks like the roundhouse was ready to be scrapped along with the SW-1

Amazingly, as of November 2018, Amtrak still had two SW1s on its roster.

They make good shop switchers. And the ones they have left have had mods like replacing the mechanically driven radiator fan with electrically driven fans and stuff like that.

These are the exact sorts of images I think of whenever I hear people complain about the EPA.
