The story about locking his keys in his car at Couger always gets a chuckle. The two roads into this area go back many years, one being a 'Military Road' that goes over the eastern side of Mt Shasta to McCloud, part of which was used by covered wagons heading into southern Oregon. The bulldozer cuts seen in Bob's photo demonstrate how SP prevented brush fires from spreading well before there was a law requiring them, some say the Law is based on the SP practise. The blade marks along the ballast indicate they have cleared fallen rocks. There happens to be a modern trail along the ballast, usually on one side, but in this area it jumps from one side to the other. So often there is as many as four trails, two bulldozer clearings along each fence line and then the trails along the ballast. Another modern improvement is the barbed wire gate across the trail, in this case both at Military Pass Road and at Deer Mountain road. Also noticing metal posts have been added by the Timber land owners at various places that had been access for photographers and other lovers of nature. The area had been logged off by Weed Lumber and also Long Bell, the Forest Service has been planting in the area and also the hill sides. There's quite a few more trees in the modern view than happened to be there when Bob made his photo. Many of the Forest Service trails in the area were made by the Weed Lumber Company and had rails to enable their early logging railroad.
