Plenty of tunnel motors coming down the hill in dynamic. Regards, Jim Evans You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! Date: 08/05/20 06:34 Re: Late Entry, Tunnel Motor Tuesday, Imperial Valley Beets, Redl Author: SPJoe Nice! And a two caboose ending! ....
Joe I thought I had seen that rear caboose in my pics before... Here's SP 4771 in Lafayette La in the 90's. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/06/20 06:49 by SPJoe. When I saw the title that included the words "Beets" and "Redlands" I had visions of copious amounts of brake shoe smoke obliterating the view of most of the train. But alas, not to be. I do note that the lead consist has 6, six-axle extended range dynamics compared with 26 axles on the helper and when comparing the 'whine' of the DB grid cooling fans of the two consists it sounds like the helper is in full dynamic while the lead engineer is calling for slightly less retarding. This is the first loaded beet train I've seen on Beaumont hill without the requisite 'cloud'. Strange indeed. Charlie Date: 08/05/20 14:11 Re: Late Entry, Tunnel Motor Tuesday, Imperial Valley Beets, Redl Author: callum_out The extended range DBs don't mean much as long as you can keep the speed up enough for the dynamics
to work. At 20-25 that train should come down on dynamics only assuming (big word) they're all working. Out Date: 08/06/20 06:32 Re: Late Entry, Tunnel Motor Tuesday, Imperial Valley Beets, Redl Author: RailRat Nice video, them beets must be pretty darn heavy!
What date/location? Congrats on VOTD too! Jim Baker Riverside, CA Date: 08/06/20 09:48 Re: Late Entry, Tunnel Motor Tuesday, Imperial Valley Beets, Redl Author: cewherry callum_out Wrote:

Keeping the speed up is never a challenge in descending grade situations; gravity will do that for you. The real challenge is keeping the speed down and under control which extended range does admirably by providing maximum retarding effort below 23 mph, (the speed where 'standard' DB retarding force begins to fade), down to 6 mph where extended range is still providing maximum retarding force. So, in actual practice the "Extended Range" is below 23 mph, not above. >At 20-25 that train should come down on > dynamics only assuming (big word) they're all > working. Which appears to be the case in the video. Charlie |
