JG Date: 05/31/23 19:02 Re: CR 3383 Author: emdsdp45 I used to go here in the early 80's. Just past the tower was a pair of air operated crossovers. I think they were mostly used for trackwork since the track was only signal for directional running. You can see the eastbound signal head above the train and in front of the white house directly across from the tower. It is a classic PRR aspect signal style with two horizontal red lights for stop. "Green" was indicated by three verticle white lights. The westbound signal was passed the two road crossing. These were block signals and were controlled by the tower operator. No CTC here. The tower operator was friendly and would allow us to come up in the tower.
Two other things were here. Erie Lackawanna's Lisbon Branch crossed over the mains and there was a Dairy Queen just a little further down on the right. Good for food and you could still see the trains. The train pictured used Conrail's favorite four axle locomotive for TV trains in the 70's and 80's which were the bought new GP40-2's and the older PC GP40's. They were usually used in sets of three or four units. One other thing that made this area interesting to watch is that the eastbound trains could have helper engines. The helpers were generally a pair of GP38's or GP38-2's added to the rear. They would push the train to Wood tower and then return light back down the grade westbound like this train.
