NS 214...Manassas, VA grade separation aerial...
Author: cinder

The long-awaited grade separation of VA 28 and the NS B-Line in Manassas, VA began two weeks ago, Here, this afternoon's NS 214 rounds the curve for a westward run out the B-Line to Riverton Jct. and thence north on the H-Line. VA 28 is at the very top of the picture and will be bridged over both the B-Line and Wellington Rd, which runs from top to bottom on the left. A portion of the small freight yard is in the lower right.

The light colored concrete in the median of Wellington Rd. at the two crossings in the lower left has been poured to prevent motorists from running around lowered crossing gates. This measure is one of several required before the FRA will allow the reinstatement of the "no train horn" rule between 10pm and 7am which had been in effect citywide until a few months ago.

Nice photo! This view REALLY gives one a true perspective of how well the location of the new wye compares to the location of the older wye (to the right of the yard office in the bottom left corner of the shot). The older wye was WAY too tight; at least now, they don't have to slow down quite as much as they did before.

Yes, the new curve is "relaxed fit" with a 35mph limit. The old "tight fit" curve was 10mph with a crew change on most trains right there at the yard office to boot. to boot.

It looks like you were on final approach into Dulles. I didn't know cameras could be operated below 10,000 ft - just kidding :)

Thanks for sharing!
