Eastern Railroad Discussion > New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great WeatherDate: 09/18/14 17:21 New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: RDG630 Can't go wrong with colorful locomotives and blue skies with puffy white clouds (sometimes those clouds did us in). Yesterday we chased the job from Union Bridge to Highfield, MD and back with SD40-2's #3451 and 3450.
First photo nearing Sabillasville westbound Second dropping cars for CSX at Highfield Third down the mountain eastbound at Fort Ritchie Road under a cloud Date: 09/18/14 17:25 Re: New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: RDG630 Next entering Thurmont b the Catholic church

Last grade crossing before Union Bridge Last passing the WM Museum in downtown Union Bridge Date: 09/18/14 20:08 Re: New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: 2720 Are these units SD40-2Ms or true SD45s?
They look great regardless!! Mike Date: 09/18/14 22:07 Re: New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: railscenes Great work to get these photos. Even in the overcast shots, those bright units seem to glow. Any idea of the heritage of these units? I'd guess SP SD-45 because of the snowplow and the notched nose for large headlight cluster, but that was a long time ago. The snowplows look too large for anything else except maybe SSW or Rio Grande? I'm not a good diesel spotter so help us out.

Date: 09/19/14 06:29 Re: New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: yhandf To G&W, they are classified as simply SD40-2's and are lettered as such. The bodies are former SP and UP SD45's, but the "guts" are SD40-2.
Rob H. Keymar, MD Date: 09/19/14 08:52 Re: New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: ChessieSystem SD40-2Ms is the designation for these SD45s after rebuild though, as mentioned above, on the G&W they are stenciled SD40-2.
Three units have SP heritage (SP 7503, 7485, 7473), the fouth UP (UP 2806). JW Date: 09/19/14 08:56 Re: New Power on the Maryland Midland & Great Weather Author: exopr What's the MMID's operating schedule for these?
