Trains and Tugs East Dubuque IL

East Dubuque, what a great spot for trains and tugs. The CN (former IC) and the BNSF (former CB&Q) run side by side up the river from near Galena IL. At east Dubuque the CN peels off to the north/east, enters a tunnel, turns 90 degrees, exits the tunnel, immediately crosses the BNSF and then onto the swing bridge over the Mississippi River. Do not have dates as these are from several visits.

Image 1, a view of the west portal of the tunnel with the BNSF tracks in the foreground..

Image 2, a Chicago Central & Pacific train heading west out of the tunnel..

Image 3, a view of the east portal of the tunnel with a southbound CN train..

there's more....

Image 4, mile board just outside the west portal with a southbound on the BNSF (maybe it was still BN when I took this)?

Image 5, looking into the tunnel from the west portal..

Image 6, this is the view turning 180 degrees from image 5...

there's more...

Great pictures!! I can never remember, is the diamond at the Tunnel controlled by BNSF or CN?

Thank you in advance.

Love your images at East Dubuque, IL, along the Mississippi River. Here's my encounter with Mississippi River tow June 23, 2016 near Lock and Dam 14 near LeClaire, Iowa.

I always wondered about that tunnel. Now I know.
A great idea for scenery on a layout.

There is another similar tunnel-diamond-river bridge complex downriver at Hannibal, Missouri, where the NS (ex-Wabash) crosses the BNSF (ex-CB&Q).

There have been some posts and nice photos of it previously here on TO. Here's a link to a few that I posted: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3004677,3005512#msg-3005512.

Must be something wrong with my thinking....if the track comes out of the tunnel, crosses the double main and then on to the bridge, how can photos 1 and 2 be showing the west portal? Explain please..? Thanks

The river generally runs north/south.
E. Dubuque is in Illinois, on the east side of the river.
The CN crosses the river perpendicularly.
The tunnel portal faces the river.

Reference santafedans' overhead photo of the scene earlier in this thread to help gain perspective of the area.

Pics 1 and 2 look like they were copied from someone's model RR.
