CP Business Train at D&H Building 10-29-2018
Author: CP4743

As most know by now, the CP business train visited the D&H this week. It was the first time it visited the D&H since CP purchased the property in 1991. The train made a deadhead run down the D&H from Montreal on Saturday night, arriving Kenwood Yard at the Port of Albany, NY before sunrise on Sunday. On it's way south the train was turned on the wye between the Freight Sub and Canadian Sub just south of Ballston Spa. The train then backed down to Kenwood. On Monday morning the train departed CP's Kenwood Yard in Albany at 8:00am for it's run north to Montreal. Photography on the south end of the trip was a challenge as the train left only a half hour after sunrise under cloudy skies with light rain. Just a mile into it's trip, the CP business train is seen rolling NB past the historic D&H Building in downtown Albany. The original D&H Building was completed in 1915 and expanded in 1918. It served as headquarters for the Delaware & Hudson Railway until the late 1970's. The tracks here are surrounded by the NB and SB lanes of I-787 and because the tracks are contained in a concrete walled trench this section of track is known as the Concrete Canyon.

Amazing location - In the center over the highway, it almost looks like a tornado.

You're right. That is a cogen plant in Rensselaer. It often "makes clouds" which can be a pain for photography to the south of here in the morning. This is taken from a pedestrian bridge that goes from downtown Albany to the Hudson River waterfront. Long ago before I-787 was built this was the approximate location where the New York Central Hudson line passenger main came off the Hudson River passenger bridge just south of Union Station. This was the Maiden Lane Bridge which was torn down when the passenger station was moved to Rensselaer and I-787 was built in the late 1960's.

Thanks for the background. So, this picture, the NYC + D&H station would be behind the photographer, where the arena is now located?

If you turn around from where I am standing the old Union Station would be just to the left when looking north. If you take a picture of a SB here you can get Union Station in the picture. The Times Union Center is to the right in this scene just south of the D&H Building.

We should clarify that the old station is still standing.
