An SD18M and Bright Red CP Power - Lake Erie Land

Thursday January 20, 2022
Vermilion, OH

This morning we had a RARE daylight Amtrak as Train 49 the Lake Shore Limited was 4 hours and 45 minutes late on its New York / Boston to Chicago run.

Beyond that it was a cold one with the light breeze making it hard to stay out and keep the fingers nimble enough to trip the shutter.
Here is some of the rest of the action today.

1. Before the Amtrak arrival at 9:38 am, the 16G came east making for a nice winter morning shot. Power is NS 8128 and 9467.

2&3. In the consist were some farm tractors which are always an interesting sight to see on flat cars. In the last photo it looks like something hanging down from the wheel areas of two tractors.

4. After Amtrak, the 24M came by heading east over the river with NS 7595 and 9793.

5. After lunch it was back down to the docks to catch this eastbound tank train with CP 7035 and CP 9828. A nice clean bright CP red leader to break up the gloom. I do not know the symbol, so if anyone has that info it would be appreciated.

6. Another surprise today was the 316 over on the Nickel Plate. A surprise for two reasons, one I didn't know he was around until I caught him in my rear view mirror as I was driving down Berkley Road, and two, he had a rather rare bird SD18M in consist. Lead unit is NS 1122 seen here ducking under Route 6 east of Vermilion heading for KM and Overlook Drive ahead on his way east to Cleveland and Conneaut. Resident pigeons decorate the top of one of the light poles.

7. A shot of the dead in tow HZRX 319 in Train 316. This is labelled SD18M on the cab side and was built in April 1960 for the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range as their 321. It was rebuilt in the Proctor, MN shops into a model SDM and later became Shelly Materials 321 before becoming Horizon Rail 319. I do not have the details on the DMIR SDM rebuild, so if anyone has that info it would be of interest.

The rebuild consisted of 645 powerpacks, recertified main generator, rewiring, second section to the fuel tank with the ballast plates from where the extra fuel capacity added moved. plus a chopnose.
