Model Railroading > Ho gatx coal/coke black cars

Does anyone know if these cars are available....they are black with red ends...I see unit trains of these at Van. Wash going to Canada...thanks

You're talking about these right? FreightCar America's 4200 Cu Ft. 3-bay hoppers. I've seen them mixed into manifests along the MRL and have heard of the unit coke trains before. Sure would love to see them produced in HO scale as well, but don't know how many different road names there really are.

There are at least GACX and GABX cars but they are otherwise the same except for the number series.

Just saw one of these units trains today in Houston headed North for another load. Had three BNSF ES44C4's on point.

NS has two classes of coal cars that are of this design, but in slightly smaller capacity, each are 3,744 cf. On NS these are steel / aluminium hybrids designs, similar to their G52X class Bethgons from Conrail, and their FCA built G113, #46100-47299 and G116, #47300-49299, class Bethgon cars. FCA is also retrofitting hybrid Bethgon bodies on to former H49 class coal hoppers originally built by Trinity as G117R class cars. I suspect the H50's will get the same treatment within the next year, if they haven't started already.

Hopper car classes are H65, #146500-148329 and H69, #148330-149329. Both built by FCA in Roanoke. A technical drawing, at least used to be available, through FCA's website.

I would buy a couple hundred if done in HO, as they are my modern era and the Bowser offering doesn't quite cut it for me.
