Uh-Oh... Do I have an issue? Rapido F40PH problem
Author: wheel_slip

I gave these models a glowing review a few weeks ago and I really just found the time to put one through its paces. I am still more than pleased with these little beasts and now even more so. The 227 is able to handle a 5 car superliner train (think Desert Wind) with no trouble at all, even on the mountain!
Now here's the "issue". When I turn the marker lights on (F9) the locomotive will not move. This happens when the sound is on or off, and if done while moving, the locomotive grinds to a stop. The lights work, but when the markers come on, the locomotive will not respond to the throttle. It sits and idles (either regular or high). The only was to make the locomotive move again is to interrupt power to it, kind of like rebooting...
Has anyone else experienced this?

Have you tried resetting? It sounds like the decoder is confused and is treating F9 like F11, which is the brakes.

Hey Andy, Just be careful u do the reset correctly. Apparently there are 2 ways to reset the Loksound decoder and one of them wipes the whole decoder clean uncluding the sound file.

Hi Bruce,

There is no way to wipe a LokSound Select, unless you have a LokProgrammer that can rewrite Selects, and they are not available to the public. Several years ago there was a way to wipe some LokSound decoders using JMRI. It was a glitch that was fixed long before we started using ESU.

To reset, set CV 8 to 8.

Best regards,

Jason

My F40PH does the same thing. Have yet to try resetting the decoder. Wasn't sure if it was an issue with the decoder and my train club's control system not playing well together. Otherwise, have had no problems and think it's a great locomotive.

My F40 does not do that. I have used it in commuter service with the markers on while shoving with no issues. I even ran it the other day with the marker lights on while running forward with no issues.

The LokProgrammer is certainly available for purchase by the general public! In fact, if more modelers would get LokProgrammers, it would make everyone's life a lot easier. I absolutely love mine and with so many manufacturers coming out with LokSound decoders factory installed, having a LokProgrammer is almost becoming a necessity. JMRI only works so-so with LokSound decoders while using the LokProgrammer makes using these decoders a breeze. Yes the LokProgrammer comes with an MSRP of $199.98 but it is a one time purchase and usable for ALL ESU decoders, LokPilot and LokSound. Plus some hobby retailers discount them.

As was noted, there is no way to erase a LokSound Select decoder by doing a reset of CV 8 to 8.
