Video-Wisconsin & Calumet F units excursion October 1989
Author: northernilrailfan

The Wisconsin & Calumet Railroad ran some weekend excursions in October 1989 with Glen Monharts' F units #106 and 109 on it's ex-MILW tracks. I recall a mention in TRAINS or R&R that 109 was so assigned because there were extra number boards for 106, so they simply used them upside-down. This is an edited clip from longer sequences of the special at Walworth, WI, on the way to Zenda, WI where it reversed, and then headed toward Janesville, WI after a stop at Walworth. The 901 is aside the depot in Walworth and we "chased" it East to Zenda where its seen heading back West. IIRC, it stopped back in Walworth and the next trip (they alternated directions) was West, but not all the way to Janesville. From about 2:30 into the clip we are West of Walworth to the turn-back location somewhere about equidistant to Zenda. We did ride it that day, but I left the camera off and just enjoyed the trip. There were chips and drinks and souvenirs for sale in the baggage car.

I like the little pace sequence!
Nice ending showing the weedy track.
Pretty decent video transfer.
What software program did you use?

Thanks for the kind words! For this project, it was 1980's Zenith VCR with a "sharpen" feature about 3/4 full, Honestech "VIDBOX" composite to USB and it's capture software and Camtasia Studios for post production. Initially (for these many tapes I have), I was copying VHS to MiniDV and capturing the MiniDV via firewire. That seemed to give a "smoother" result, but took twice as long. Looking to upgrade my USB capture device. FWIW, the rest of my dubs like these on 9 DVDs I've made after requests for more scenes. Theres more of the WICT F's day on the Best of 1989 DVD.

The 901 lineage is lengthy Built as D&RGW 5644, American Crystal Sugar 54, Chicago, Madison & Northern 564, Charleston and Western Carolina 901 and then finally WICT 901 The 106 ( not 109) is a former Milwaukee Road unit that came to the Monhart collection much later ( along with a B unit). The 106 was built as a P but had the steam generator replaced with a stack of wheels for extra ballast. So I suppose there may have been an extra set of number boards that got flipped over.

If your computer has a CD/DVD drive, you can skip one compression step:
Put that mini DVD in the drive, and open up the video clip file itself in your editing software. Then you can select the pieces you want, and string them together on a timeline, export to DVD, mp4, etc., and you're done.
Look in the VIDEO_TS folder for the clip(s). They also contain the audio.
