Train 14 -- Klamath Alert (Oregon)
Author: stash

The incident was reported just after 11:00am this morning. An Amtrak train is stopped near Odell Lake after a suicidal male has taken the passengers hostage in one of the cars. He has threatened to harm the passengers and himself. It’s unknown if he has any weapons or access to them. There is a major police response from the region. Details are limited and we are monitoring the situation. Updates to follow as we get

11 and 14 will most probably meet at Judson, just south of Eugene.  14 is almost 5 hours late now.

Sounds more to me like one disturbed individual.  Here's hoping for a successful, and non-violent, outcome.

Too long between smoke breaks?
Just kidding.
Hope the calm people handle it professionally and safely.
Too bad he disrupts the lives of so many other passengers, ATK and UP crew, and first responders.
To the media he is below the radar after Dayton and El Paso so he gets no publicity.

I hope they at least kicked him off the train!

Update:

Klamath County Law Enforcement has one suspect in custody. A command post was setup in the area earlier. No reports of injuries at this time that we are aware of.

The train was being evacuated at time of this post. We believe the situation is now under control. This train was northbound with Eugene being the next stop and passed through Klamath Falls earlier.

Details are still vague and we don’t know exactly how the passengers were held, how many were held or if there were any weapons.

**Note: This article contains (reported) but unconfirmed early information that could be revised when an official press release is obtained.

Breaking Update:
An Amtrak spokesperson is downplaying today’s event aboard an Amtrak train and has told Klamath Alerts that “there was never any hostage situation” aboard the Coastal Startlight 14.

The spokesperson made a brief statement to us saying that a passenger had an unknown medical problem, so the train was stopped so that passenger could be off loaded. He said “The passenger made menacing statements”. The spokesperson could not confirm who the suspect is, or any other information about that person at the present time. “The passengers were never held against their will” said the spokesperson. The train continued to Eugene 4.5 hours late after “offloading the passenger” during the incident.

From Klamath Falls News website:

"Mason Lira, of Fresno CA, made concerning statements about weapons and threats to passengers and the conductor. He made unusual gestures and acted in an unsettling way which prompted a call to Klamath 911 Emergency Communications District at 11:06 AM.
The train stopped west of Highway 58 at Odell Lake near Shelter Cove where first responders were dispatched to the scene.Law Enforcement met with Amtrak crew on scene and boarded the train.Mr. Lira was arrested without incident. No weapons were located and no injuries were reported."

Just like El Paso, this must be Trump's fault. I'm sure the left wing media will find the link.

Why did it take 4.5 hours to offload him ? Being in middle of nowhere ?

Sir, Your remark is unnecessary, uncalled for, typical of your many political posts, and, at this particular time, really stupid.

That's a good question.  I've read that there was a command post set up in the area to deal with the situation.

I agree with Mr. White and I too am getting tired of those POLITICAL posts getting through
when I have had very much milder comments deleted. Let's just stop the political statements
since we are all of differing opinions and T/O is not the place to air our frustrations.

News report that there was a SWAT team that boarded the train. Interesting in that it's not an easy thing to do with all the passengers, aisleways, distractions and all.

Redding Ca news site with a short video clip:

https://krcrtv.com/news/shasta-county/caught-on-camera-swat-team-enters-amtrak-train-after-departing-redding

+ There's been a number of occasions in Siskiyou County where a single Deputy climbs on board at a quiet road crossing to remove a passenger, usually a drunk. Also an occasion where the guy jumped out the other side of the train and ran into the woods, not giving up for a few days.
