The Baby Builder Zips Across The Klickitat River
Author: walstib

Train 28 rolls across the former Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway's arched-concrete bridge spanning the Klickitat River a week ago Saturday.

The 160-foot-long span was built in 1908.

What identifies a sleeper as opposed to a coach?  The small window?

Yes- the quick & easy way to ID a Sleeper is the single small window on the lower level opposite the vestibule (entry) door. Coaches don’t have this window.

I will say this is all a bit confusing.....

- Actual LD train reports by people riding (Ross' trip report on #3 and #49, TRAINS Magazine's "on/off reporting") indicate that few people are occupying sleepers and coaches.
- At the time of my August LD Amtrak booking about a month ago, the Empire Builder was getting pretty booked up.....not sure if that is really holding up at present though. I think there's been cancellations.
- Amtrak announced LD consist arrangements back in May/June that are not really following to what is operating now, (Lake Shore, Crescent, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, etc.).

Amtrak is reporting a downturn in ridership for "trains" but the consists so far on the LD trains don't totally reflect that at present. We know that three day a week service is coming, but that was also supposed to be preceded by reduction in consists.............

In particularly, it was never announced that the "Baby Builder" would be GAINING a second Portland sleeper as it had had back in 2018. I don't think it had the second Portland sleeper last year, 2019. It was though "introduced" after many had long advocated for a second Portland sleeper.

Nice photo Mr. B., as usual.

Where were you positioned when you shot it?

I was standing at the Rowena Summit of U.S. 30, about 8 miles west of The Dalles, Oregon.

Beautiful photo indeed!  Thank you.

Can anyone share a photo of SP&S No. 2 at this location or nearby?

Yes, Richard, you're correct.  At the southern terminus of the pre-SP&S Columbia River & Northern Railway which became part of the SP&S as its Goldendale Branch.

Not exactly nearby, Bob, but here's one of #2 from Beacon Rock.

Sorry, I can't do any color correction on this old photo right now because I just had to replace my computer's hard drive and haven't had time yet to reload all of my software.
