One of the clearest photos of an engineer in a P42 that I have seen!  Those angled windows, way up so high, and the desk being back a ways, just inhibit portrait shots.

Ha!  You showed up pretty good, huh?  Thanks for the wave- makes the photo!  (But shouldn't you keep both hands on the wheel?!)
SR

I didn't see Petey, but I waved at the diner anyway.

He said he saw you! The “white exhaust plume” makes your shot “pop”— good seeing you and hope you got the NWI newsletter w/ your photo in it, too, SR!

Nice shot indeed!!!

The white thing in the windshield (fireman's side behind the windshield). Forward looking camera?

Correct. Outward facing camera. Which makes me wonder, do Amtrak units have inward facing cameras now? The class ones all do so I'm guessing that Amtrak does as well.

Depends on the age of the engine....some don't have the ability to host inward cameras though if they get their cabinets upgraded they may.

At one time (not long after 911) Amtrak had a plan to install cameras in cafe cars.  They said it was to watch for Evil Doers, but the camera was mounted in such a way that it could record everything the LSA (bartender) was doing- but was behind us and therefore we blocked any view of who we were taking to (you know: Evil Doers).  The Union went nuts and the LSA's quickly figured out which obscene gestures most upset management.  Eventually it dawned on management how painfully tedious it was to watch HOURS & HOURS of video of employees flipping them off.   The cameras were soon abandoned and eventually removed altogether. (Thank you!- we really needed the shelf space the recorders took up.  Space is always an issue in a RR galley)  If I recall, maybe only 2 cars got the cameras and only the one in the 8801 ever worked (8801 is a California Car Diner).
I don't know how T&E fared in all this.
