Electric train on Kiwi rail
Author: RogersPass

Hi This was a Train at Otorohanga and if I remember was around 1650 Tonnes and about 600 meters in length.
The 3 loco are 4000 hp each. These Locos run from TeRapa, which is in Hamilton to Palmerston North in the south.
There was 22 Built and around 15 left in service. They all are set for Overhauls in the near further.
Cheers Brian..

Some of Kiwi rail trains are Over 2000 tonnes with logs, coal and paper,
plus in the South Island, there are trains with 5 Locos all up front working though a
Tunnel, which is just short of 9km long and  up 1 in 33 grade. It is in the tunnel for around 25-30 Minutes.
Cheers Brian..

Wow!  They were really flying along!  What voltage is the cantenary ?  I reran that video many times to enjoy the arm chair railfanning!  I could feel the air turbulence as the train sped by! And the clickety-clack of the wheels on rail !
New Zealand is on the retirement bucket list, beautiful Country!

Hi CM 80-46,
Well it looks like it was flying but the curve coming up I think is a 65,or a 70km
so I think I was a little close to make it look as if was going fast.
As for the Power It is 25kva As far as I know..
Cheers Brian..

Only 2 pantographs up so I guess third loco is dead.

NZ has two different electrification systems - 1500v DC around Wellington and 25Kv AC New Plymouth to Hamilton and (a surprisingly short distance away) the Auckland commuter area.all in the North Island. The Otira tunnel with the 1 in 33 gradient is South Island. South Island had electrification through Otira and also Christchurch to the port at Lyttleton but in both cases the arrival of diesel traction killed the electrifications.

Hi Thanks for the Nice comments, I have one thing to clear up, The
place the electric trains run is from Te Rapa in the North to Palmerston North
in the South.not New Plymouth as that on a difference branch.
You have the rest all good and thanks..
Cheers Brian..
