Many of us go out to shoot trains when potential severe weather threatens, have you thought about taking a free weather spotters class from the NWS? Go to their website: www.weather.gov, enter the town or zip code closest to you, and look for a link to the Skywarn training. It's free and could save your life!

The National Weather Service Severe Storm Center in Norman, OK is presenting a
series of programs on storm spotting and reporting.

The most recent schedule, with (Eastern) (my local) time noted:


WEBINAR Tue. Mar. 25th 7:30 PM LOCAL TIME Online Training

WEBINAR Tue. Apr. 1st 7:30 PM LOCAL TIME Advanced Online Training


The webinars last about 2 hours with a break of about 10 minutes in the middle.


To register for the online training and advanced webinars, go to this site:

Select a webinar that interests you and click on: "REGISTER HERE"

When the Storm Spotter Training page comes up, click on: "SHOW IN MY TIME ZONE"
Select: your time zone and fill in the required fields.

After you register, the NWS will send you a reminder the day of the program,
This registration must be repeated for each webinar.

The presentation is a "Powerpoint" program and is centered around Norman, OK but
much of the the information is relevant to other areas. The most recent program had
check-ins from Australia and Brazil.

One need not be an amateur radio operator or SKYWARN spotter to participate.

Once finished, you will be e-mailed a certificate of participation for each webinar.

A lot of NWS offices now offer their area-specific SKYWARN classes online either as webinar so or as self-paced courses. If you're really interested, check the educational links and find Jetstream, "the online weather school for everyone," and COMET/UCAR MetEd, which is a little more technical.
