Western Railroad Discussion > What happened to this engine?Date: 08/15/18 21:45 What happened to this engine? Author: ACR_Ted Does anyone know what the story is about this engine? It is NS 2727 photographed at Fargo OK on August 6 on an eastbound BNSF train.
A search on line came up with nothing. Thanks Ted Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/15/18 21:46 by ACR_Ted. Date: 08/15/18 23:17 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: 2720 Looks like it suffered an electrical fire!

This looks like maybe it hit a semi truck and caught the fuel on fire. Although there appears to be minimal damage to the handrails. Ted Curphey Ontario, OR Date: 08/16/18 06:30 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: mile250 Fire involving batteries, or connections to them?
Date: 08/16/18 07:43 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: KY_Railfan This looks like damage from an external fire. There really isn't much damage apparent to the engine. The Conductor's side window appears to have been melted, but there just doesn't seem to be much damage to anything inside.

Author: Roadrailer The burn patterns indicate the fire was more involved on the conductor side, but there is fire damage to the truck and nose as well.
Most likely the fire started external to the locomotive then may have included the cab interior, hence the warning. Date: 08/16/18 09:13 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: arizonaBNSF Typical EMD . . .

I don't see any physical damage to the engine as if it hit something, There's a curious amount of fire damage near where the traction motor cable duct is. Also, all 3 axles on this truck appear to be idlers but that can be due to multiple reasons.

Date: 08/16/18 09:31 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: Roadrailer This could be a trailing unit of a consist involving a crossing collision. Fuel tanks and such don't always immediately explode into flames as many incidients involve multiple locomotives and train cars in the subsequent fire.
The comment of idler axles in the truck could point to a traction motor fire. Date: 08/16/18 10:26 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: ts1457 Maybe it got T-boned at a grade crossing.
Date: 08/16/18 11:43 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: Trainmaniac07 The things that stand out to me are the number board being melted, the cab glass what looks to be shattered and the cab window open.
With a melted number board there was some significant heat up there but there is not many burn marks. Something happened to the cab glass, the window is open, likely because it cant be shut now. I would also think we should be able to see some of the cab interior back wall, my assumption is that we cant because it charred. would a traction motor fire torch the inside of a cab? Would have to burn through a 1 inch thick steel plate first. Probably not. Date: 08/16/18 19:00 Re: What happened to this engine? Author: TomG You guys are overlooking the obvious. Being a mechanic and a fireman, Ive seen this alot and have repaired dammage and paint. It wasnt the engine that burned, it was along side something that was on fire. The dammage was from various heat and flame inpingement.
