Built during the war years, 4460 never got Daylight Colors. The museum said it served in both passenger and freight service, and pulled the last SP steam train in 1958.

The War Production Board would not authorize SP to acquire more passenger engines, so the GS-6 class (SP 4460-4469) reverted to the GS-1/GS-2 driver diameter (73.5") and cylinder dimensions (27" x 30"), and were designated as "General Service" rather than "Golden State" locomotives. Highly doubtful however in today’s mainline operation world but I guess you never know.
